The Reuters news service has poured cold water on CNN’s overheated claim that the Secret Service warned Donald Trump’s campaign that his gun rights rhetoric seemed to threaten the safety of Hillary Clinton.

Reuters reported that “a federal official on Wednesday said the U.S. Secret Service had not formally spoken with Republican Donald Trump’s presidential campaign regarding his suggestion a day earlier that gun rights activists could stop Democratic rival Hillary Clinton from curtailing their access to firearms.”

Trump gleefully broadcast Reuters’ refutation of the CNN article.

A BITTER GENERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN BEGINS

On Tuesday, Democrats, and many parts ofthe established media, claimed that Trump had casually threatened Hillary Clinton during an off-the-cuff campaign speech. This media-magnified claim — just like other claims, whether true or not — helps the Democrats’ push their narrative that Trump is too unstable to risk putting in the White House.

Here are Trump’s comments that Democrats used to create the media furor;

Hillary wants to abolish — essentially abolish the Second Amendment. By the way, if she gets to pick, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know. But I tell you what, that will be a horrible day, if Hillary gets to put her judges in, right now we’re tied.

CNN kept the controversy going Wednesday evening with a claim that Secret Service officials warned Trump’s campaign about the remarks. In an updated version of the article published at 8.30 pm, CNN claimed:

A US Secret Service official confirms to CNN that the USSS has spoken to the Trump campaign regarding his Second Amendment comments.

“There has been more than one conversation” on the topic, the official told CNN.

However, CNN also undermined its own 8.30 pm article by saying that “it’s unclear at what level in the campaign structure the conversations occurred.”

The Reuters article was published 8.57 pm, or almost 30  minutes later. Headlined, “Official: No formal Secret Service discussions with Trump camp on remark,” the Reuters article said:

A federal official on Wednesday said the U.S. Secret Service had not formally spoken with Republican Donald Trump’s presidential campaign regarding his suggestion a day earlier that gun rights activists could stop Democratic rival Hillary Clinton from curtailing their access to firearms.

… Earlier CNN had reported that there had been multiple conversations between the campaign and the agency.

In the late afternoon, Trump had scoffed at the CNN’s claim of Secret Service concern.

Six Aspects Of Donald Trump’s Pro-Gun Push

by AWR HAWKINS5 May 2016169

Presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has a plan to defend gun rights in general and the Second Amendment in particular. The plan is visible in the policies set forth by Trump as well as his understanding of the value of the Second Amendment and the freedoms it guards.

Here are six aspects of his plan.

National Reciprocity for Concealed Carry–In a September 18 position paper,Trump explained that “the right of self-defense doesn’t stop at the end of your driveway.” He contended that right to defend one’s life is viable wherever a person goes. He said, “I have a concealed carry permit and…tens of millions of Americans do too. That permit should be valid in all 50 states. A driver’s license works in every state, so it’s common sense that a concealed carry permit should work in every state.”

Understands Concealed Carry As ‘A Right, Not A Privilege’–This the “why” behind Trump’s push for national reciprocity. For him, honoring concealed carry licenses from every state is the “common sense” way to honor the right to bear arms for self-defense. He makes the point by contrasting rights and privileges, saying, “[If we can recognize licenses in all 50 states as it relates to] driving – which is a privilege, not a right – then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege.”

Opposes ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban–Trump views attempts to ban “assault weapons” as a prime example of the left’s attempt to use language and demagoguery to limit the freedoms of the people. He said:

Opponents of gun rights try to come up with scary sounding phrases like “assault weapons,” “military-style weapons” and “high capacity magazines” to confuse people. What they’re really talking about are popular semi-automatic rifles and standard magazines that are owned by tens of millions of Americans. Law-abiding people should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice.

Opposes Expansion of Background Checks–Trump believes background checks have failed to live up to the hype surrounding them at the time they were enacted and, therefore, ought not be expanded. He observes that the U.S. has had background checks since 1998, yet they have not prevented numerous high profile shootings and terror attacks against our country and our stateside military personnel. He says we have a situation where criminals get guns when they need them–background system or not–while law-abiding citizens are burdened with going through a check that was supposed to “be instant, accurate and fair,” but isn’t.

Supports ‘Harsh Penalties’ For Gun CrimeTrump said:

advertisement

Several years ago there was a tremendous program in Richmond, Virginia called Project Exile. It said that if a violent felon uses a gun to commit a crime, you will be prosecuted in federal court and go to prison for five years – no parole or early release. Obama’s former Attorney General, Eric Holder, called that a “cookie cutter” program. That’s ridiculous. I call that program a success. Murders committed with guns in Richmond decreased by over 60% when Project Exile was in place – in the first two years of the program alone, 350 armed felons were taken off the street.

Arm U.S. Troops On Military Bases–Trump strongly opposes the policies that disarm troops and make them sitting ducks on military bases. He said:

Banning our military from carrying firearms on bases and at recruiting centers is ridiculous. We train our military how to safely and responsibly use firearms, but our current policies leave them defenseless. To make America great again, we need a strong military. To have a strong military, we need to allow them to defend themselves.

Amy Schumer Accepts Award, Thanks Those Who Died In Theater Shooting

Getty Images

by AWR HAWKINS18 Jan 201683

On January 17 actress Amy Schumer accepted a Critics’ Choice award and closed her acceptance speech by thanking the two victims who were shot and killed during a showing ofTrainwreck in Lafayette, Louisiana.

The deceased victims–33-year-old Jillian Johnson and 21-year-old Mayci Breaux–where killed when John Russell Houser allegedly opened fire on July 23.

At the end of her five minute, twelve second acceptance speech, Schumer said, “And I want to thank Mayci Breaux and Jillian Johnson, who died in Lafayette because a mentally ill person got their hands on a gun.”

Schumer did not mention that Houser bought his gun “legally.” According to Fox 8, the ATF found that Houser bought his .40 caliber handgun “in February 2014 at a pawnshop in Phenix City, Alabama.”

This means Obama’s executive expansion of background checks would not have stopped Houser, because Houser acquired his handgun via a background check–which is the same way Gabby Giffords’ attacker acquired his gun, and it’s the same way Virginia gunman Vester Lee Flanagan acquired his handgun as well.

Amy Schumer Ignores Facts to Push Gun Control at Critics’ Choice Awards

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

by AWR HAWKINS18 Jan 201649

While accepting an award at the Critics’ Choice Awards, actress Amy Schumer ignored the fact that alleged Lafayette theater gunman John Russell Houser passed a background check for his firearm, and instead described him as “a mentally ill person [who] got their hands on a gun.”

The difference between reality–Houser passed a background check with a federally licensed gun dealer–and Schumer’s gun narrative–he was mentally ill person who managed to get a hold of a gun–couldn’t be more stark. The former shows that gun control is impotent to stop committed attackers, while the latter serves Schumer’s purposes by leaving room for the belief that more gun laws and regulations might have prevented Houser from getting a gun.

It should also be noted that on July 27–just four days after Houser allegedly opened fire in the Lafayette theater–a judge who handled a case involving him in Georgia said she never ordered him committed for mental treatment.

The Associated Press reported that Houser “came before Cason’s court in 2008 when Houser’s family asked her to intervene in Carroll County, where he had allegedly menaced his daughter and in-laws.” On April 22, 2008, Cason signed an order “authorizing deputies to detain Houser and take him, against his will if necessary, to a treatment facility for a mental health evaluation.” He was subsequently “delivered by deputies to [a] hospital for evaluation,” but Cason said no order for commitment followed.

Yet Schumer included all the gun control talking points during her award acceptance speech by saying, “I want to thank Mayci Breaux and Jillian Johnson, who died in Lafayette because a mentally ill person got their hands on a gun. But we can end gun violence together.”

Again, this push ignores the fact that the Houser did not acquire his gun in a back alley or out of a car trunk in an abandoned parking lot or from a private seller at a dreaded gun show. He bought it via a background check–the very kind of check President Obama and Amy Schumer’s cousin, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), say should be required on every gun sale to keep Americans safe.

But Schumer can’t admit this because doing so would undercut the crisis-mentality she has to maintain in order to convince the ill-informed that we need more gun control now.

Donald Trump Vows to End ‘Gun-Free Zones in Schools’– During Obama Townhall

Reuters

by CHARLIE SPIERING7 Jan 20164,400

As President Obama was at a CNN town hall meeting discussing his passion for gun control, Donald Trump vowed to end gun-free zones.

The billionaire presidential candidate was hosting a campaign rally in Burlington, Vermont at the same time as Obama’s televised meeting, juxtaposing the two events.

Perhaps it was no mistake then that Trump chose to talk about gun control at the end of his speech.

“I will get rid of gun-free zones in schools — you have to — and on military bases on my first day. It gets signed. My first day – there’s no more gun free zones,” Trump told supporters as they cheered wildly.

Trump pointed out that gun-free zones were dangerous because they attracted people considering a mass shooting.

“You know what a gun-free zone is to a sicko?” Trump asked. “That’s bait.”

He lamented that soldiers were killed by terrorists in a military recruitment center and at a military base because they were not allowed to have weapons – even though they were trained to use firearms.

“That ends immediately,” he said. “We’re going back to sanity in this country, we’re going back to strength in this country, we’re going back to intelligence, and we’re going back to common sense.”

Trump added that if good people had guns in California or Paris, they might have been able to stop the terrorists who perpetuated attacks.

“You have bad stuff happening, but at least we’re shooting back and we’re going down shooting,” he said. “Nobody can dispute that.”

The Nuclear Option— Executive Gun Control: Obama Creates ‘Crazy List,’ Disarms the Elderly

by CHARLES HURT6 Jan 2016906

When all the hectoring is finished, the professorial lecturing is done, all the political posturing is over, all that is left after executive gun control are tears. And crocodile tears at that.

Even for those of us long tired of the false hopes and outright lies from this White House, President Obama’s crude gunplay Tuesday was pretty shocking.

It was shocking for its hollowness. Shocking for its low-mindedness. Shocking for the complete disdain the man has for all the families of victims of gun violence that he trots out to carry his political water. And what for? To save a future life? Prevent a past death?

No. He even admitted on live national television that his raft of meaningless proposals will do nothing to prevent a single gun crime and nor would they have ever prevented one in the past.

“Each time this comes up, we are fed the excuse that common-sense reforms, like background checks, might not have stopped the last massacre. Or the one before that. Or the one before that. So why bother? I reject that thinking.”

In other words, Mr. Obama is saying: “Let’s make up some meaningless new gun laws just ‘cuz.”

Or, as his former chief of staff might say, “Never let a tragedy go to waste. Not when you can hector, lecture and grandstand over it. Score some political points.”

No, all of this executive action is designed entirely to create one giant charade that Mr. Obama understands, cares and is offering capable solutions to a problem he wants to fix.

Yet, nothing could be further from the truth.

“Every single year, more than 30,000 Americans have their lives cut short by guns. Thirty thousand. Suicides, domestic violence, gang shootouts, accidents. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have lost brothers and sisters or buried their own children,” he waxed on, as if he really intended to do something about it.

“Many have had to learn to live with a disability or learn to live without the love of their life. A number of those people are here today. They can tell you some stories,” he continued. “In this room right here, there are a lot of stories. There’s a lot of heartache. There’s a lot of resilience, there’s a lot of strength, but there’s also a lot of pain. And this is just a small sample.”

In the end, he offered nothing. Nothing that isn’t already the law. More paperwork. More busy work.

And tears. Empty tears. Meaningless tears. Fake tears.

Now it is possible that these “executive actions” by the president have a deeper, more sinister intent. They are the camel’s nose under the tent, designed to wend through the courts and prop up rulings that support the notion that a future president could, indeed, pass tougher gun restrictions by fiat.

Since voters refuse to elect lawmakers who want to strip citizens of their guns, maybe Mr. Obama can get unelected judges to do it.

To be sure, Tuesday’s announcement was an open admission that, indeed, the president does intend to use medical records from Obamacare to create a national “crazy list” of people, especially the elderly, who cannot have guns to defend themselves.

And certainly, these cynical antics reveal the president’s deep and disturbing disconnect from America. In the past, he has specifically praised the gun bans in Britain and Australia. Yesterday, he held up Communist China as his latest role model.

Suppose we should just be grateful, then, that Mr. Obama doesn’t really care to actually do something to stop the gun violence.

Donald Trump Vows to ‘Unsign’ Obama’s Executive Gun Control

Carlos Osorio/AP Photo

by AWR HAWKINS3 Jan 20161,143

With President Obama’s executive action for gun control expected this week, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump let it be known that he will “unsign” Obama’s executive gun control once he is sworn in as president.

Obama is expected to expand background checks to cover more private gun sales, and to put more reporting requirements on licensed gun-dealers, according to statements from White House officials. He is working out the details on his actions with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on January 4.

According to CNN, Trump is vowing to undo the executive actions Obama will take this week.

While speaking in Biloxi, Mississippi, on January 2, Trump said:

There’s an assault on the Second Amendment. You know Obama’s going to do an executive order and really knock the hell out of it. You know, the system’s supposed to be, you get the Democrats, you get the Republicans, and you make deals. He can’t do that. He can’t do that. So he’s going to sign another executive order having to do with the Second Amendment, having to do with guns. I will veto. I will unsign that so fast.

Trump made a very similar statement during a January 3 interview on Face the Nationwhen the told host John Dickerson, “The one good thing about an executive order is that the new president, when he comes in, boom, first day, first hour, first minute, you can rescind them.”

AG Lynch Explains Obama’s Gun-Control: Gov’t Looking For ‘Individuals Who Seek To Avoid Registering’

Carolyn Kaster/AP

by AWR HAWKINS4 Jan 20161,683

“We will be looking for those individuals who seek to avoid registering,” Attorney General Loretta Lynch told reporters following a Jan. 4 meeting with President Obama regarding executive gun control.

Lynch was referencing the portion of Obama’s pending executive-action gun-control measure that will require gun-sellers to register as federally licensed gun dealers if they meet criteria demonstrating they are “engaged in the business of dealing in firearms.”

This language also means that private sellers registered as federally licensed dealers will have to perform a background check on every sale.

One problem is that the White House executive action fact sheet does not present any numerical minimum on the number of sales that a private seller must conduct before he is considered to be “engaged in the business of dealing in firearms.”

Rather, it indicates a private seller can be considered to be “engaged in the business of selling firearms” regardless of the location from which she sells, the frequency with which he sells, or the number of guns ahe sells.

In light of this, CBS News reports that Attorney General Loretta Lynch is making it known that the ATF will be watching and looking for private sellers who “seek to avoid registering” as being “engaged in the business of selling firearms.”

Lynch stressed that an “exception” remains for “the hobbyist and collector,” but the executive order means private sellers cannot continue to “hide behind that [exception].”
