Obama's last State of the Union address in three words: Disjointed, irrelevant and disappointing

WHITE HOUSE

As a long time observer of the political process and as someone who served twice in the White House, I remember the great anticipation for past State of the Union speeches.  It was an activity where many hundreds of hours and top level staff worked on the speech for many months before it was delivered. It was to be a recap of what had been accomplished and an agenda for the future.

I remember the excitement of the president going to Capitol Hill to address the nation, standing before the other branches of the government, the Congress and the Supreme Court, and either inspiring or informing all of just what the title states: this is the State of the Union.

Part of the drama has been the grand entrance into the people's House, the House of a Representatives and the president being mobbed by members trying to shake his hand or pat his back and for this one night he is treated like a rock star or to be more current like a reality TV star.

The repeated standing and applauding for the key phrases that appeal to the partisans in his party and the negative responses from the opposition.

Everyone is there!

Anyone  of importance in our government along with  the ambassador contingent  from the diplomatic community, is there on display for the nation to see.

This has historically been an opportunity for  a dramatic speech to the nation and the world and without question as important as any that a president might deliver. Tuesday night was the last of these that President Barack Obama will ever give.

As I watched the visuals, the new young Speaker, Paul Ryan, sitting alongside the vice president whom he tried to replace in the last election.  Biden, realizing daily that this is his last hurrah -- and privately telling people he wishes he would have run one more time against the faltering Hillary Clinton.

Speaker Ryan, who now holds more power than anyone except maybe the lame duck president, sits in a seat he never anticipated a year ago. He will be the one who sets the legislative agenda for the future and the president’s only retort is his veto pen.

I watch the one Socialist member of Congress, Senator Bernie Sanders mix and greet the members of the Joint Chief of Staffs of our military, with their stars on their uniforms and rows of medals on their chests.

There is not a member in this chamber who would ever have thought a year ago that Sanders would be viewed as a serious challenger to Hillary Clinton, as he now is.

For someone as skilled at giving a speech as our forty-fourth president, Mr. Obama failed miserably at either inspiring or informing us of the real State of the Union.

What he did do is give a political campaign speech. It was disjointed, irrelevant and disappointing. He is not running for a third term and the agenda he laid out is not what the country wants or feels. He looked tired and ready to move on.

He talked about how great we are as a nation. True,  but what he didn't do was set an agenda for his final year or for his legacy.

He set goals but failed to explain how we can accomplish them. He talked about leadership but has failed miserably as a leader.

On the very day the president is delivered his speech, the Iranian Navy captured two US Navy ships that allegedly were incapacitated and drifted into Iranian waters. Now Iran is holding these sailors hostage. Yet, there was no mention of this incident in the president’s speech.

This is an escalation of hostile behavior by the Iranians who just last month fired unguided missiles at our aircraft carrier , the Harry S. Truman, in the same waters.

I can't imagine, if he was still with us, that President Truman would disregard these acts of hostility. He was a man of strength. With the country feeling that terrorism is one of our top problems, the president dismissed our concerns. Don't worry! We've got the strongest military in the world. We got Bin Laden.

This is what he said about Iran: "That’s why we built a global coalition, with sanctions and principled diplomacy, to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran. As we speak, Iran has rolled back its nuclear program, shipped out its uranium stockpile, and the world has avoided another war."

I don't think so. Bad behavior by Iran is dismissed because President Obama wants to protect his sacred and risky deal.

The number one concern of the country is fighting terrorism. The recent home grown action by the terrorist killings in San Bernardino, California has made this more of a concern. But in spite of this, just this week the president is to release more prisoners from Guantanamo. It is still his top priority to close this prison in spite of strong objections from the Congress, the military and law enforcement officers.

Many of the prisoners already released have returned to the terrorist battlefield. "That is why I will keep working to shut down the prison at Guantanamo: it’s expensive, it’s unnecessary, and it only serves as a recruitment brochure for our enemies."

This is a speech that will not be remembered and will historically be irrelevant.

The man who was the most partisan president in recent history, talked about how disappointed he is that the partisan divide  has not healed.

The office of the presidency has been diminished under Barack Obama’s two terms. His party has been demolished at the State house level and in the loss of both Houses of Congress. But he still panders on.

This is not an historic presidency and he exemplified his "leading from behind" with a very forgettable farewell State of the Union.

No wonder the country is desperately looking for new leadership.

Iran Releases Footage of U.S. Sailor Apologizing After Capture

Iranian state-controlled news outlet Tasnim released video Wednesday afternoon that shows a U.S. sailor apologizing for purportedly infringing upon Tehran’s sovereignty.

On Tuesday, Iran seized two U.S. naval boats, arguing they illegally entered Iran’s territorial waters. The Pentagon said they encountered mechanical troubles, forcing their boats to go off course.

“It was a mistake, it was our fault, and we apologize for our mistake,” an unidentified sailor told the Iranian interviewer, who then asked him if his GPS system penetrated Iran. “I believe so,” he responded.

In another segment of the interview, the sailor held by the Iranians is asked, “How was the Iranian behavior with you?” He responds, “The Iranian behavior was fantastic while we were here. We thank you very much for your hospitality and your assistance.”
“Did you have special problem” with us, the interviewer asked. “We have no problem, sir,” the U.S. sailor responded.

Abas Aslani of Tehran’s Tasnim news Agency released more photos of the encounter on social media, which show the female sailor was forced to wear an Islamic hijab.
Iran’s PressTV has also released extensive footage showing the sailors’ arrest and detention. In the video, Iranian soldiers are seen rummaging through American weapons and ammunition, and checking the sailors’ identities.
The naval crews were taken Tuesday evening as they were navigating the Persian Gulf in riverine boats while in an area between Bahrain and Kuwait, according to reports. President Obama would later deliver his State of the Union Address without mentioning the sailors held by Tehran.
The sailors were held overnight on Fari Island, where an Iran Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) base is situated.
The ten sailors are now safe at a U.S. military base in Qatar, according to U.S. officials. The sailors will be debriefed and receive a medical checkup, but there are no signs they were harmed, the official told AP.

John Kerry Thanks Iran for Releasing Kidnapped U.S. Sailors

Secretary of State John Kerry – who served in Vietnam – thanked Iran this morning for releasing the U.S. sailors that they detained yesterday.

“I want to express my gratitude to Iranian authorities for their cooperation ‎in swiftly resolving this matter,” Kerry said in a short statement.

He added that he was particularly attuned to the situation reminding the nation that he was “a former sailor myself” and understood the importance of Naval power.

Kerry signaled that the incident was not a sign of provocation, but rather a symbol of how the two countries could work together after Iranian nuclear deal.

“That this issue was resolved peacefully and efficiently is a testament to the critical role diplomacy plays in keeping our country safe, secure, and strong,” he said.

On Tuesday, hours before President Obama’s final State of the Union Address, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) seized two Navy vessels and abducted their crew, a total of nine men a one woman. IRGC officials confiscated the two Navy vessels and their GPS equipment, and held the soldiers overnight. Iranreleased the soldiers Wednesday morning, along with a series of photographs of the soldiers in captivity.

In addition to Kerry’s statement of gratitude to the Iranian government following the incident, the BBC reported that the United States government officially apologized to Iran for unnamed “unprofessional” acts by the American sailors alleged by the Iranian officials, though this report comes from Iranian officials and is yet to be corroborated by the United States.

Watch: Trump Fires Back at Obama, Haley for SOTU, GOP Response Criticisms

by JEFF POOR13 Jan 2016

In an appearance on Wednesday’s “Fox & Friends,” Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump reacted to rhetoric that appeared to be aimed at him during last night’s State of the Union address from President Barack Obama and during the Republican response from Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC).

On Obama, Trump said he was living in a “fantasy land” when it comes to the seriousness of the threats facing the country.

However, as for Haley, he took her to task for weak on immigration and for having sought campaign contributions from him in the past.

“She’s weak on illegal immigration, and she certainly has no trouble asking me for campaign contributions, ‘cause over the years she’s asked me for a hell of a lot of money in campaign contributions. So, you know, it’s sort of interesting to hear,” he continued. “Perhaps, if I weren’t running she’d be in my office asking for money. But now that I’m running, she wants to take a weak side on immigration. I feel very strongly about illegal immigration. She doesn’t, and I think the people in her great state, I love her state, I’m there a lot, and by the way I have a massive lead in South Carolina. We have a massive lead. They’re incredible people, and they feel like I do. Believe me. Because they don’t like what’s happening in our country.”

Trump was also asked about the potential of a Trump-Haley GOP presidential ticket, to which Trump seemingly dismissed.

“We’ll pick somebody, but we’ll pick somebody who’s very good,” he replied. “But whoever I pick is going to be very strong on illegal immigration. We’ve had it. We’ve had it with illegal immigration.”

Obama’s Chief of Staff Promises ‘Audacious Executive Action’ in Final Year

www.nationalreview.com

White House chief of staff Denis McDonough pushed back against the notion his president is played out in the wake of his last State of the Union address, promising “audacious executive action” in Barack Obama’s final year in office.

During a breakfast with reporters in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, McDonough responded to the observation that the president’s final speech before Congress lacked the usual pledge to “go it alone” if lawmakers failed to act. Coupled with the feeble executive actions on gun control announced earlier this month, had President Obama rethought the utility of acting unilaterally on issues important to the White House?

“We’ll do audacious executive action over the course of the rest of the year, I’m confident of that,” said McDonough, explaining that President Obama’s decision not to outline specific executive actions was more about a commitment to process than a lack of willpower.

“Process is your friend, but process also dictates what you can do,” McDonough said. “And we do want to make sure that the executive actions we undertake are not left hanging out there, subject to Congress undoing them.”

In addition to gun control, the White House has expressed interest in further unilateral actions on immigration reform, and in working around Congress to close the prison in Guantanamo Bay. But McDonough said the White House is considering executive action on any and all issues, and that the main question President Obama plans to ask himself is “Why not?”

“And so that’s the spirit through which we’ll approach this last year,” McDonough said.

Details remain scarce, but news reports say Iran has detained two U.S. Navy small boats and 10 American sailors that were operating near Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf.

The boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the boats supposedly experienced mechanical problems and began drifing toward the Iranian-held island. As a result they were taken into custody by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Apparently the U.S. has contacted the Iranians and they have stated that the sailors will be allowed to continue their journey “promptly.”

The Navy says the boats were on training mission and we do not know the exact type of craft involved, although a variety of U.S. Navy small boats are used in Persian Gulf. These include the Small Unit Riverine Craftpictured below and Riverine Command Boats shown at the top of this post as well as others.

This comes shortly after Iran fired rockets near an American supercarrier transiting the Straits of Hormuz and just hours before the President’s State of The Union Address as well as the final implementation of the Iran nuclear deal.

We will keep you updated as this story unfolds.

UPDATE: 2:52PM PST- New York Timessays the semi-state controlled FARS News Agency of Iran published the following:

“... the boats had illegally traveled more than a mile into Iranian territorial waters near Farsi Island, in the Persian Gulf. It said that forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Navy had confiscated GPS equipment, which would “prove that the American ships where ‘snooping’ around in Iranian waters.”

UPDATE: 3:03PM PST- CNN Pentagon corespondent Barbara Star reports that nine male sailors and one female sailor are being held and they will not be released until morning.

UPDATE: 3:12PM PST- Foxtrot Alpha has heard and CNN reports that the boats may have been supposed to be refueled in the proximity of the island by a larger craft. If this report is true, and the vessel never showed up, this could explain how both boats became incapacitated.

UPDATE: 4:47PM PST- CNN.com reportsthat there has been voice communications between the sailors Iran detained and the U.S. Navy and that there will be a hand-off of the crews in international waters in the morning. It is unclear if the U.S. Navy boats involved will also be handed at that time.CNN.com has also reported the same scenario that we outlined above, that the boats were near the island for a refueling event. It remains unclear if that event took place or not and if it was related to the incident or not.

UPDATE: 11:39PM PST- Reuters reports that the IRGC has pushed away from the idea that the ten U.S. sailors will be released soon and that they are under interrogation as to their mission. IRGC spokesman Ramazan Sharif said:

“If, during the interrogation, we find out that they were on an intelligence gathering mission, we will treat them differently... What others say about the sailors’ prompt release is their speculation, and I don’t confirm or deny it...”

Iran’s semi-governmental news agencyFARS News has Rmazan quoted saying:

“The incident happened yesterday and the US vessels had trespassed Iran’s territorial waters... After violating Iran’s sea border, the IRGC navy arrived at the scene powerfully and warned the two US vessels and they complied with the warning... They should rest assured that our behavior will be based on Islamic kindness.”

Split statements between the Iranian government and the IRGC are not unheard of and the sailors could still be returned very soon. Still, it shows the prospective of the IRGC on the matter.

UPDATE: 12:35AM PST- Iran hasapparently demanded an apology for the U.S. Navy boats entering into their territorial waters, which they say they have gotten. Meanwhile, some reports state that at least one governmental source in Iran states that the boats’ navigational equipment malfunctioned.

UPDATE: 2:18AM PST- Iran says they have released the sailors and FARS News has posted pictures of them seemingly in good condition. There has been no confirmation of this yet by U.S. officials.

UPDATE: 2:40AM PST- CNN reports that U.S. officials have confirmed that all ten sailors and their boats have been returned to the U.S. Navy cruiser USS Anzio (CG-68)in international waters. Tweets coming out of Iran also show that the boats involved were in fact Riverine Command Boats

Facts Are Facts=> Obama Owns Worst Economic Numbers in 80 Years, Since 1932

Jim Hoft Jul 30th, 2015 8:35 am 33 Comments

Big government Obamanomics is even worse than we thought.
The US economic expansion is the worst on record since World War II.

Thanks to Obamanomics the US economy is plodding through the worst recovery in decades.
The Wall Street Journal reported:

The economic expansion—already the worst on record since World War II—is weaker than previously thought, according to newly revised data.

From 2012 through 2014, the economy grew at an all-too-familiar rate of 2% annually, according to three years of revised figures the Commerce Department released Thursday. That’s a 0.3 percentage point downgrade from prior estimates.

The revisions were released concurrently with the government’s first estimate of second-quarter output.

Since the recession ended in June 2009, the economy has advanced at a 2.2% annual pace through the end of last year. That’s more than a half-percentage point worse than the next-weakest expansion of the past 70 years, the one from 2001 through 2007. While there have been highs and lows in individual quarters, overall the economy has failed to break out of its roughly 2% pattern for six years.

It’s even worse than we thought.
Obama looks even worse, ranking dead last among all presidents since 1932 – over 80 years.
The Daily Caller reported:

Over the first five years of Obama’s presidency, the U.S. economy grew more slowly than during any five-year period since just after the end of World War II, averaging less than 1.3 percent per year. If we leave out the sharp recession of 1945-46 following World War II, Obama looks even worse, ranking dead last among all presidents since 1932. No other president since the Great Depression has presided over such a steadily poor rate of economic growth during his first five years in office. This slow growth should not be a surprise in light of the policies this administration has pursued.

An economy usually grows rapidly in the years immediately following a recession. As Peter Ferrera points out in Forbes, the U.S. economy has not even reached its long run average rate of growth of 3.3 percent; the highest annual growth rate since Obama took office was 2.8 percent. Total growth in real GDP over the 19 quarters of economic recovery since the second quarter of 2009 has been 10.2 percent. Growth over the same length of time during previous post-World War II recoveries has ranged from 15.1 percent during George W. Bush’s presidency to 30 percent during the recovery that began when John F. Kennedy was elected.

Robert Griffin III Clears Locker for Redskins, Leaves Cryptic Messages

The Associated Press

by ROBERT WILDE12 Jan 201618

Robert Griffin III left mysterious notes when he cleared out his locker—most likely for the last time—at FedExField on Sunday.

After the Green Bay Packers trounced the Washington Redskins 35-18 in a NFL wildcard game, RG III attached one message quoting scripture to his locker: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

And he left a longer missive that Yahoo Sports attributed to Mother Theresa:

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

Griffin, a first-round pick in 2012 out of Baylor, enjoyed phenomenal success in his first year with the Skins, taking the team to the playoffs and setting the record for the all-time highest quarterback rating in NFL history for a rookie.

“It’s tough to unite this city around anything,” Barack Obama said back then. “Believe me, I know. But RGIII makes it look easy.”

This past season was a different story for the 25-year-old. Due to a series of knee injuries over the previous years and his inability to excel as a drop back passer, Griffin fell to the #3 quarterback on the depth chart behind a burgeoning Kirk Cousins and a veteran Colt McCoy.

Unwilling to risk RG III getting a career ending injury in the last year of his contract before his option year-which would obligate the Redskins to pay Griffin$16.2 million for next season—the Redskins decided to let him ride the pine, giving RG III zero minutes for the entire season.

Nevertheless, Griffin is still an impressive athlete with a great arm and could end up on another NFL roster. Perhaps the Cowboys, who could use a backup for Tony Romo, might sign him. The former Baylor QB might be attractive to someone like owner Jerry Jones who is known for his obsession with big-name stars. Griffin will need to reestablish himself as a NFL quarterback but will suffer a major reduction in pay from the $16 million he commanded this year.
